Dear CFA Officers, Being informed about discussions conducted in CFA concerning the approval of the new regulation that allows novice Siberian cats imported from Russia without a pedigree to be certified in CFA outside Russia, we would like to express our concern about this point. We must note that the mentioned proposal seems so much unreasonable, adventurous and risky for the Siberian breed populations in foreign countries, that none of the felinological organizations in the world has ever tried the acceptance of similar regulations. Siberians are very new to CFA, and remain to be a young breed in general. The type of the Siberian cats is not well established yet, and this notion is best supported by quite noticeable differences between SIB standards in various cat fancies associations. Moreover, knowing the situation with Siberian cats in Russia, we can state, that there is still quite a number of backyard breeders offering substandard animals and deliberately outbred animals under the name of Siberians. It would be a great pity if these cats penetrate into such a serious and notable system as CFA thus ruining the two-decade long work aimed at refinement of the type of archetypic Siberian and being conducted not only in Russia but in a number of other countries including US and Canada. For now most of novice cats certified in Russia are subjected to the strict recognition procedure that is carried out by experts knowing history and development of the breed, foundation lines and their development. This helps them to properly assign the animal under question, as HHP or as SIB. The recognition rules become more and more strict. This provides some guarantee for quality of the animals certified to the breed in Russia. Currrently, Siberian cats present in world known cat fancies systems such as CFA, FIFe, TICA, WCF, etc already represent sufficiently wide pool of lines and diversity for breed development. At the same time, Siberians are new to CFA and it can take time for the judges and new CFA breeders to create their own stable lines and accumulate experience in the breed and major breed determinants. Therefore, the opportunity to obtain a novice “Siberian” without significant investment of time and money could have been very tempting. As the Siberians are not particularly widespread in USA, we can also imagine certain breeders or pet shop traders presenting forged documents of the cat origin to introduce into the breed the results of their interbreed mixtures or foreign domestic cats and it will be very hard to follow it in each case. It is therefore interesting to know what documental basis will be needed of bringing a novice cat into Siberian breed. The proposed practice is quite unique. The equivalent of this could be if European breeders start to certify novice Maine Coons, and Russian breeders will do so with e.g. Korats or Sokoke. We consider all the mentioned variants of novice certification as impossible and harmful to either breed and to the general concept of native (aboriginal) breeds. We hope, that our opinion will be taken into consideration, and CFA, known as the most conservative American cat system and the founder of American felinology, will keep on to the type of original Siberians and will not allow the acceptance of the rule for certification of non-pedigreed Siberians of the questionable or “paper-certified” origin. Relying on your understanding, Society of the Siberian Cat Fancies (Russia) and single catteries, namely Sibaris,...
